What drives the price

What determines scrap car value?

A scrap car isn’t priced off a sticker. Buyers look at what they can do with it — resell parts, recycle the metal, or both — and bid on that.

Make, model and year

Popular models keep their value as parts donors long after they stop being worth fixing. A common SUV or pickup usually draws more buyer interest than a rare or discontinued model whose parts few people need.

Mechanical and physical condition

An engine or transmission that still works, an intact body and good glass all add value. Heavy collision damage, a seized engine or major rust reduces what can be reused. Describe it honestly — an accurate description means an offer that holds up at pickup.

Scrap metal content and weight

Every vehicle carries a base value in its steel, aluminum and other metals. Heavier vehicles carry more of it, and metal prices move with commodity markets, so that base value shifts over time. Missing components such as the catalytic converter lower it.

Demand for reusable parts

Engines, transmissions, doors, lights and wheels from in-demand models sell on to repair shops and owners. When a part is sought-after, buyers can pay more for the whole vehicle than its metal alone is worth.

Calgary recycler demand

What local yards and parts buyers need changes week to week. When several Calgary buyers want the same kind of vehicle, competition pushes offers up — which is why the same car can be worth different amounts at different times.

Pickup location and access

Towing is always free and nothing is deducted from your offer for pickup. A vehicle in a tight underground parkade, with no wheels, or well outside the city takes more work to collect, and buyers take that into account when they bid.

How CarGone works

Why CarGone can get competitive offers

CarGone isn’t a single scrapyard naming its own price. It’s a marketplace: your vehicle goes in front of local Calgary buyers, and they compete for it.

  • One form or call reaches a network of local buyers, so you don’t have to phone around yard by yard.
  • Buyers bid against each other, which tends to produce a stronger offer than one buyer quoting alone.
  • You see one clear cash offer, and you decide. There are no fees and no pressure to accept.

Competition among buyers helps produce strong offers, but no one can promise the highest possible price for every vehicle. If you’re selling a newer car in great condition, a private sale or dealer trade-in may get you more, so it’s worth comparing.

  1. 1 You submit your vehicleYear, make, model, condition and photos if you have them.
  2. 2 We share it with local buyersYour vehicle’s details go out to CarGone’s Calgary buyer network.
  3. 3 Buyers competeInterested buyers bid through CarGone’s auction process.
  4. 4 We present your offerYou get one cash offer. Accept it or decline it — your call.
  5. 5 Free pickup and paymentIf you accept, we book the tow and you’re paid at pickup.

Pricing context

Reading these payouts realistically

Real payouts are a better guide than a generic price-per-tonne table, but only if you read them for what they are.

The examples above are a selection of completed Calgary transactions, chosen to show the range sellers have received. They are not a random sample, so they don’t tell you the average scrap car price in Calgary — and we don’t publish an average we haven’t verified.

The $3,300 2015 Honda CR-V is the highest scrap payout shown. Several examples fall between $650 and $1,000, and the 2005 Pontiac Vibe received $350. Two vehicles of the same model can land far apart depending on their condition and what buyers need that week.

Scrap prices also move with metal markets, so a payout from earlier in 2026 doesn’t guarantee the same amount today. The only reliable number for your vehicle is a current offer.

Often toward the higher end

  • Popular SUVs and pickups with strong parts demand
  • Newer model years, even with mechanical failure
  • Engine, transmission or major panels still usable
  • Complete vehicles, catalytic converter included

Often toward the lower end

  • Older, smaller cars with little parts demand
  • Stripped vehicles or missing major components
  • Severe collision, fire or flood damage
  • Vehicles that are very hard to reach or recover

FAQ

Scrap car value questions

There’s no single price. In CarGone’s recorded transactions, sellers have received up to $3,300 for a scrap-classified vehicle, a 2015 Honda CR-V. Other selected examples include several between $650 and $1,000, and $350 for a 2005 Pontiac Vibe. Your vehicle’s value depends on its make, model, year, condition, weight, usable parts and current buyer demand. Send us the details for a free, no-obligation offer on yours.

Mainly the make, model and year, its mechanical and physical condition, how much metal it carries, demand for its reusable parts, what Calgary buyers need at the time, and how easy it is to pick up. Missing parts such as the catalytic converter lower the value.

Often, but not always. Larger vehicles carry more metal, and popular SUVs and pickups tend to have parts buyers want — the four highest payouts shown on this page are three SUVs and a pickup. A smaller car in high demand can still outsell a larger one with little reusable value.

Yes. It doesn’t need to start or drive — a flatbed tow truck collects it as-is. A non-running car can still carry valuable parts and metal, so it’s worth getting an offer.

Yes. Towing is included anywhere in Calgary and the surrounding area, and nothing is deducted from your offer for pickup.

Same-day pickup is available across Calgary. Once you accept an offer, we book the tow for a time that suits you, depending on that day’s schedule.

You’re paid at pickup, by cash or e-transfer — your choice. Have your vehicle registration and photo ID ready, and remove your licence plates and personal items: in Alberta, the plates stay with you, not the vehicle.

Yes. Offers are free and come with no obligation. If the number isn’t right for you, just say no — there’s nothing to pay and no pressure.
